Located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, in the far south of the Maldives, this isolated island has become an unmissable destination for divers passionate about large pelagic species.

Here, tiger sharks are the stars. But they are far from being the only ones.

Thresher sharks, hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, oceanic mantas, silvertip sharks… along with remarkably well-preserved reefs make Fuvahmulah a truly unique diving destination.

Why Fuvahmulah?

Back when we were working in the Maldives, we had vaguely heard about this small island in the south.

Then, little by little, Fuvahmulah started making a name for itself in the diving world.

Everyone came back saying the same thing: “You have to go to Fuvahmulah.”

Pierre dived there for the first time in 2019.

And as soon as he came back, his verdict was clear: this island is exceptional.

Fuvahmulah has a very particular geographical configuration. Unlike many Maldivian atolls, the island is directly exposed to the deep waters of the Indian Ocean.

Its drop-offs, cleaning stations, currents and geographical location attract a wide variety of large pelagic species.

That is what makes diving in Fuvahmulah so different.

You don’t come here just to admire the reef.

You also come to look out into the blue, wait, observe…

And sometimes, watch a creature appear that you will never forget.

Our Second Travel Dodo Adventure Expedition

After the success of our first expedition to Socorro, we wanted to set off again.

But this time, we were heading to the Indian Ocean.

Fuvahmulah, Maldives.

A destination that has become one of our true diving favourites.

Coming from all corners of the world, our group meets in Malé.

From the very first hours, the energy is incredible. Some people are meeting for the first time, others are seeing each other again, but one thing is certain: it already feels like this is going to be memorable.

We board our domestic flight to Fuvahmulah.

A few hours later, the island finally appears.

And the change of atmosphere is immediate.

There are no huge international resorts here.

Fuvahmulah is a real Maldivian island: lively, authentic, with its own rhythm and an atmosphere completely different from the resort islands most people imagine when they think about the Maldives.

When we arrive, even though it is late in the evening, the dive centre team gives us a warm welcome.

And then we settle into our accommodation, which has been fully privatized for the group.

But above all… there is only one thing on everyone’s mind:

tomorrow, we meet the sharks.

First Dive with Tiger Sharks: Welcome to the Tiger Zoo

The first briefing is probably one of the most important moments of the trip.

Diving with tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah is not something you improvise.

The team explains the rules, where to position ourselves, how to behave and, most importantly, why staying calm and attentive is essential.

Some of us are extremely excited. Others are a little more nervous.

And then comes the moment we have all been waiting for: entering the water at the Tiger Zoo.

We descend.

And very quickly, we understand why Fuvahmulah has become such an iconic destination for divers dreaming of encountering tiger sharks in the Maldives.

The first shark appears, then another, then another, and another.

They move peacefully around us – majestic, powerful, impressive.

We simply stay there, watching them, surrounded by an almost unreal sense of calm.

The tiger sharks are here.

And being this close to them makes the encounter even more impressive.

The first word everyone says when we reach the surface?

WOW.

Everyone comes back up smiling.

For several of us, this is an encounter with an animal we had dreamed of seeing for a very long time.

The Encounters

Tiger Sharks: The True Stars of Fuvahmulah

It is impossible to talk about diving in Fuvahmulah without talking about tiger sharks.

Today, they are one of the main reasons why divers travel here from all over the world.

But what fascinates us even more is that behind these spectacular encounters is an animal we are still far from fully understanding.

Thresher Sharks: A Magical Encounter

If there is another animal that truly left an impression on us in Fuvahmulah, it is the thresher shark.

With its elegant body and incredibly long tail, it is simply fascinating to watch.

Around the island, certain cleaning stations offer particularly good opportunities to encounter them.

Hammerhead Sharks: Searching in the Blue

Then comes a completely different kind of dive.

The current is strong.

We drift through the blue.

The guide scans the horizon.

We wait for his signal.

And suddenly: “Go down!”

We descend, and in the distance, the first silhouette appears, then a second, then several more.

A group of around 10 hammerhead sharks, out in the blue.

An encounter that was absolutely not guaranteed at that time of year, making the experience even more exceptional.

The Reef

It would be a mistake to come to Fuvahmulah only for the sharks.

Beneath the surface, the island also has an exceptionally rich marine ecosystem, with reefs that rank among some of the most beautiful and best-preserved in the Maldives.

These dives reveal drop-offs, coral formations and abundant marine life, with reefs that remain in excellent condition.

Fuvahmulah’s unique position, directly exposed to the deep waters of the Indian Ocean, also creates a particular dynamic underwater: currents, deep water and regular encounters with large pelagic species.

Sharks We Learn to Recognize

During our stay, we also had the chance to attend a presentation about sharks and shark identification led by a passionate Australian marine biologist.

And this was one part of the trip that we particularly appreciated.

Because when you start recognizing individual animals, something changes.

You no longer simply see “a shark.”

You begin to recognize an individual — its markings, appearance, characteristics and behaviour.

For thresher sharks, this identification work is only just beginning. The first analyses started this year.

But every new observation, photo and video can help gradually build a better understanding of the individuals visiting Fuvahmulah.

And this is also what we love about diving:

not simply watching these animals, but learning more about them so we can better protect them.

The Debate Around Tiger Shark Feeding

Fuvahmulah also raises a question that is widely debated within the diving community: shark feeding.

It is a subject that deserves to be approached with nuance.

Feeding allows divers to observe tiger sharks under very particular conditions, but the practice also raises questions about its potential impact on the animals’ natural behaviour.

At Travel Dodo Adventure, we prefer a simple approach: understand before judging.

We believe this debate deserves to be studied and discussed with marine biologists, local professionals and the people who actually work in the field.

What seems essential to us is to continue developing our knowledge of these animals and to make shark conservation a priority.

Because the more we understand sharks, the better we understand why protecting them is so important.

Fuvahmulah Really Is a Destination Apart

There are no huge resorts or overwater villas here.

Instead, you discover a real Maldivian island, with a local atmosphere and a rhythm completely different from the Maldives most people imagine.

And underwater, the experience is just as different.

The diving is wilder, large pelagic species are never far away, and every dive can bring a new surprise.

But above all, for anyone dreaming of diving with tiger sharks, Fuvahmulah is clearly a destination not to be missed.

After diving here for the first time in 2019, returning in 2021 and then coming back again with our Travel Dodo Adventure shark diving expedition, one thing is certain:

Fuvahmulah has once again made us want to come back.

The Dodo’s Advice

Before travelling to Fuvahmulah, here are a few tips based on our own experience. They will help you make the most of the adventure and arrive well prepared.

What Is the Best Time to Dive in Fuvahmulah?

You can dive in Fuvahmulah all year round.

Tiger sharks are present throughout the year. Thresher sharks can also be encountered year-round.

January to April is particularly interesting for hammerhead sharks, while March to May is a good period for oceanic mantas.

And as if that wasn’t enough, you never know when a whale shark might appear.

The island is also rich in macro life for those who enjoy it but, let’s be honest, you probably aren’t coming all the way to Fuvahmulah to see nudibranchs.

What Is the Water Temperature?

The water remains warm throughout the year, at around 28°C (82°F).

A wetsuit suited to your own sensitivity to cold is still recommended, especially when doing several dives per day.

What Diving Level Do You Need?

We recommend Fuvahmulah for experienced divers who are comfortable with currents, deep dives, blue-water diving and using their dive computer.

How Long Should You Stay?

Ideally, plan several days of diving to experience the different dive sites and maximise your chances of encounters.

How Do You Get to Fuvahmulah?

Fuvahmulah can be reached from Malé by domestic flight.
